Web Links: The Arts

Art Cyclopedia   "Our mission is to become the definitive and most effective guide to museum quality fine art on the Internet.  Index to 700 leading arts sites, and more than 24,000 links directly to an estimated 80,000 works by 7,000 different artists (8/9/01).  if an artist is in an arts museum collection, then he or she is qualified to be listed in our database."  Lots of art accessible at one site.

The Louvre  "Established in 1793 by the French Republic, the Louvre Museum is one of the earliest European museums."  This link is to the English version of the page.  French, Spanish, and Chinese? are also available.  Sections include: "The Collections - Presents a selection of the works of art from each of the seven departments of the museum.  Virtual Tour: This section presents 70 images QTVR (360°) which allow to discover about fifty rooms of the museum."  There is also a visitor information section and an on-line magazine.  [The presentation works best if your display is set to 800 x 600 pixels. This is fairly easy to change in Windows 95/98 and you may want to learn to change between settings to make the best use of your program or web site.  rc]

Guggenheim Museum  The Guggenheim main page provides links to its four sites around the world (New York, Bilbao, Venice, and Berlin) plus a link to the Guggenheim Virtual Museum.  "The first phase of the Guggenheim Virtual Museum will be launched Spring 2001 as part of a three-year initiative to construct an entirely new museum facility. The structure will be an ongoing work in process, with new sections added as older sections are renovated. The project will consist of navigable three-dimensional spatial entities accessible on the Internet as well as real-time interactive components installed at the various Guggenheim locations."

National Gallery of Art "The National Gallery of Art houses one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major achievements in painting, sculpture, and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the present. [You can] search the collection by specific artist, title, or a combination of criteria; tour the collection thematically by choosing medium and school; explore in-depth studies that focus on artists, themes, and specific works of art; download a collection tour in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish (PDF format); review the Gallery's World War II provenance research of paintings in its collection."

Victoria and Albert Museum "The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is the world's largest museum of the decorative arts and is home to 145 galleries, including national collections of sculpture, furniture, fashion and photographs."
